Off and Flying in 2012!

It's been a wee while since I've added on the new and fresh things happening with Computers In Homes for Auckland - terrible I know! Here I am!

2012 is shaping up to be a VERY busy year - exciting new projects starting and many more families participating this year. I am delighted to welcome aboard: Wymondley Road School (Otara), Flat Bush School (Otara), Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Puau Te Moananui-a-Kiwa (Glen Innes), Sir Douglas Bader Intermediate School (Mangere East), and, last but by no means least, Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate Middle School (Otara)!! Watch this space for upcoming paparazzi moments with these schools.

The participating families will be in training during Term 1 and Term 2, with graduations beginning in April. Graduates will number at 85!

New things in the upcoming Projects: NETSAFE

What is NetSafe? NetSafe is an independent non-profit organisation that promotes confident, safe, and responsible use of online technologies.

To offer the best possible advice and information to our families participating - Netsafe will assist in a training session with CIH families - to take place before graduation. I am delighted to share this with you all and, if you happen to be near a school hosting a NetSafe session - please join in! Big thanks to Lee Chisolm at NetSafe for arranging representatives to visit our projects.

NetSafe is supported in strategic partnership with the Ministry of Education and Internet NZ. Don't forget to check out their websites.

Before I forget! What about those February storms?! Who caught the amazing waterspout touching down in Browns Bay? I'm sure I'm not the only one that loves storms but we have a couple of our Franklin families with modems that fell victim to those lightning strikes - a couple modems fizzled out joined shortly by a couple monitors! Be careful during those storms - do you have a surge protected power-board?

Just before I sign off - if you have a new experience or question to share with us since gaining your computer - don't be shy! You will likely encourage other students and pick up new ideas and challenges!

We did it! Woohooo!

What a fantastic time out at Waiuku! I attended the graduation with Di and Hazel Jennings (2020 Communications Trust). We arrived early and joined families, staff and trainers in a lovely late afternoon tea. The venue was the staffroom and it was quite cosy. The tamariki were all excited and chattering with us as soon as we arrived. The parents/grandparents all wanted to share about their experiences from the first session right up to next week (which hasn't happened yet!).

The wonderful trainers Cara Hughes and Maria Harris shared just how much the project really changed their participants lives. It is a real joy to see our adults engaging in learning and modelling this for their children and grandchildren.

From that first meeting ...

I returned a couple weeks later with fellow coordinator Sue Kini to meet the whanau from 4 different schools at a combined gathering hosted by Pukekohe North School. The turnout was excellent - and after an initial in-depth question and answer session - the sign-ups were numerous.

At the meeting we confirmed our trainers for the project - Raemon Matene and Denise Proctor. A plan was made and with excitement the project began! Pukekohe North were keen to host with a suite of over 20 computers - things looked great!

A short while into the training - everything changed and we decided the best way to keep the fire going was to install a training pod at the Puna Reo! What a rush! Every family participant in the project training there in well planned sessions AND enjoying every minute of it!
We even had speaker phone sessions where Denise and the class would be asking a host of questions by phone. They would take these sessions and instigate their own researches.
One thing about Pukekohe is the number of families that were waiting to be part of the project. Unfortunately, we just couldn't take them all on.
Graduation day finally rolled round and along with Hazel Jennings (2020 Communications Trust), Jackie Lawrence (The ARK), Dr. Paul Hutchinson (National MP) and all of the families - we gathered at Nga Hau E Wha Marae and celebrated with a powhiri, presentation and lunch.

Congratulations to all of our Pukekohe Graduates - I look forward to hearing the new things that your families will take on with this new tool. I wish you all prosperity in your new endeavours.

Whanau Meeting View Road School

Tumuaki Cris Hull at the Whanau Meeting, View Road School

We first met Tumuaki Cris Hull on our first trip out to Pukekohe and Waiuku. We were able to meet with most of the staff of View Road School and Cris at the same time. The presentation was received and welcomed warmly. Before the coffee had been made - trainers had volunteered, the dial up rural connection had been verbally scorned and the discussion for families had already begun. What an energetic start Waiuku!
A POD of 7 computers has now been installed for the family training to begin.

I returned to Waiuku to visit the school again for the Whanau meeting 22 August. The project has two main trainers - a day session and a night session. There is a back up trainer just in case! Our meeting was punctuated by the accidental setting off of the fire alarm - and a lot of laughter. It's awesome to see the rapport between staff and the families that were present. Thanks to the parents for asking all the questions they did! You kept me on my toes! The project will kick off their training sessions 29 August - way to go Waiuku! Sue Kini and I will be visiting on the 30 August to check out the anecdotes and catch up with Cris. it is never too early for feedback.

It was a wonderful, sunny morning in Tuakau where we met with John Allen, Project Manager for Rural Connect and Primary Focus. John has a commitment and passion to see broadband available in the more rural areas and digital connection in those same communities. John's background knowledge of the Franklin area will be of immeasurable help as we work with our more rural projects. Great work John!

MEETING THE FRANKLIN CHAMPIONS!

20 June - 22 June, Roadtrip to Pukekohe

Di and I travelled to Pukekohe to meet the next cluster of projects and their champions. The first port of call was Pukekohe Intermediate School, where we met Gary Sweeney - Vice Principal, IT and Project Champion. He had invited staff to join the meeting and view the presentation along with Robyn Withers-Lauer, Tumuaki for Pukekohe North School. Robyn is now our Project Champion for Pukekohe North! The meeting started off quietly but by the end of the presentation and discussion - there was a buzzing at the potential the programme could have in their schools! They're all about finding solutions and eliminating problems from the start. It's great when staff are already thinking, "I have families of students in my class that NEED that programme - when does it start??". The meeting was successful and planning had begun already for targetting whanau in each school.

Our second meeting was with Te Honongo Puna Reo. Our contact there was the very welcoming Tumuaki Denise Proctor and Matua. Both of these leaders were excited about Computers In Homes and actually having access for their own collective whanaus. It was during this meeting we learned about the great community initiative taking place in Pukekohe. A community that is working on unity - where different sectors know what the others are doing. This is the approach all three participating schools are taking. Exciting! Beginning as a community project together! They're excited and so am I! These projects will kick off at the end of August. The joint Whanau meeting will be Tuesday, 30 August. Watch this space folks!

Rosebank School Graduation

Rosebank School in Avondale, graduated their successful families on July 13 and what a fantastic turnout! So many family members came to celebrate and cheer on their parents! A big thank you to the champion of the project Lavinia Robyns Lead ICT and Principal Heather Bell. The trainer was Michelle Hudson, who brought a lot of fun and practical elements to the sessions. She would even create problems with the hardware for students to troubleshoot. Rosebank parents also had the assistance and support of mentors along the way: Joce Williams (Co-Chair CIH Steering Committee), Jan Sila'ila'i, Aunty Bernadette, Mesepa Matthes, Tautala Tevaga, Simotu Lavea, and Phoebe Fabricius. Special guests for the evening included MP David Shearer, Brian and Jackie Lawrence (Conbrio) along with Di Das (CIH National Director).

Manurewa High School Graduation

Manurewa High School hosted the graduation of their 25 successful families July 14. A huge thanks to their champion Vice Principal Daniel Wilson, and to their energetic trainers Tim Randel and Saubree Edinberry. Thanks to our special guests for the evening - your support is greatly appreciated: MP for Manurewa George Hawkins, Co-Chair CIH Steering Committee Colleen Brown, Brian and Jackie Lawrence (Conbrio). It was great to have Di, National Director for CIH, in the house too!
A multimedia presentation inclusive of students work and interviews was part of the evening's agenda. Impressive! Student's were only too happy to share a reflection, opinon, vote of confidence and thanks with all of us. It was wonderful to see the turnout of proud families. It's no mean feat to enter the world of digital literacy if the technology is a frightening thing. Having friendly, fun and patient trainers like Tim and Saubree make the trip a lot less fearful and more an adventure in learning.

Te Kura Maori O Nga Tapuwae - Second Graduation!

The first of our graduations was Te Kura Maori O Nga Tapuwae, in fact a second round of successful families! Their trainer Lauren Pompey did an exceptional job with her bi-lingual teaching. I enjoyed attending a session where I saw a lot of enjoyment by parents participating and great interest in the topics being presented. One of the highlights of any graduation is hearing from families how the computer will become an asset to them. One of the families is extremely busy with work, study and sporting commitments. The computer and internet will be utilised right across the board. Let's see some of that feedback here families! Congratulations on your successes! Auckland Regional Update....

NEWSFLASH NEWSFLASH NEWSFLASH!!

A new Regional Coordinator has been appointed for Auckland. We welcome Cara Sefuiva who joins us from Computers in Homes Tokoroa. Here is Cara at the launch of CPF3 in Waikato 2009, in blue in the centre, when Hon Tariana Turia spoke about digital whanau benefiting from Computers in Homes. Cara has visited all the CIH schools in Auckland and commented on the warmth and great feeling of the schools and their staff. This week Cara will be attending training sessions at Rosebank School and Manurewa High to meet parents and tutors.

Rosebank School pod where one class of parents train on their own machines. A massive 31 parents have begun training with tutor Michelle Hudson, assisted by ICT Lead teacher Lavinia Robyns, and numerous mentors who donate their time to translate and assist, including co-chair of the Auckland Steering Group, Joce Williams.

A Manurewa training suite where another epic venture of 3 classes with 27 families have begun with tutors Saubree Edinberry and Tim Randle.

Te Kura Maori O Nga Tapuwae begin any day with their 2nd intake of around 10 whanau, thanks to the energy and commitment of ICT teacher Lauren Pompey.

Kia ora ra tatau all the fabulous Auckland schools, principals and staff who support the kaupapa of raising the digital literacy of Auckland parents and their children. Tumeke!

TKKM o Nga Tapuwae & Manurewa High School

Manurewa High School begins training Term 2 with 25 families, and a second intake of 12 families will run at Te Kura Maori O Nga Tapuwae in Term 2 also. All graduating at the end of Term 2.

Rosebank School Family Meeting

Rosebank School family meeting last week was well attended by parents and staff, full of interest and questions about the programme.

ICT Lead Teacher Lavinia Robyns and Principal Heather Bell have done a great job in generating interest and recruiting 30 families to begin training as soon as Term 2 kicks off.

2 wonderful tutors have been chosen to work with the parents, as well as a team of volunteer mentors to buddy the learners though their experience, including Auckland CIH Steering Committee co-chair Joce Williams. Such a warm friendly atmosphere at this school and everyone so enthusiastic to get started.

Monday’s class is during school time so parents will train on their own computers which they will take home after graduation.

Jean Batten School

CIH has been happy to work with Jean Batten School over a number of years because of the strong school spirit, commitment to learning, sense of fun and great management skills.

Teachers for the school have shared the training duties and all staff have attended launches and graduations.

We have had 4 intakes between 2006 and 2010, graduating a total of 55 jubilant families.

School CIH Champion is ICT and Te Reo Maori teacher Houwawe Paapu and we have worked with 2 great principals who have hosted the programme, Gary Moss and Jeff Bruce. A hospitable school is the essence of our work, so that parents feel welcome and valued.

JBS graduation celebrations include entertainment and VIP guests, food to share and many, many cups of tea.

Jean Batten most recently graduated 9 families Dec 2010 and we await photos to share with you.

Our Glenavon superstars graduated on Thursday 25 November.

Well done everyone! You made it.

A wonderful blessing was given, where we were reminded how important the programme is not only for the parents but also for the children and their future learning. There was a great community feeling, really supportive and uplifting. And the parents were stoked to finally take away their new computers!! Thanks to Elaine and Mohammed from Glenavon School for making the programme such a success.
